CHURCH SYSTEM

The project “Churches of Venice” is based on the Church System in the area of Santa Marta, which occupies the western end of the city of Venice.

We will guide you through the ”calles” of this area to discover the history of the churches built there. For this reason we have provided a path which is also contained in our AR experience. The starting point is at the former church of Santa Marta which is located on the western boundary of Venice. The church was constructed in the 14th century but now is deconsecrated and it is one of the headquarters of the Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice.

We will continue with the former church of Santa Teresa, founded in the 17th century, but then deconsecrated in 1810 to build an orphanage. Now the former church is a part of the IUAV University of Venice.

The trip will continue at the church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, a church that allegedly was founded in the 7th century by refugees escaping from Padua because of the Lombard invasions.

Continuing we will visit the church of San Raffaele Arcangelo, dating back to the 6th century; nowadays we can see the result of a reconstruction that took place following the fire of 1106.

Then we will get to the church of San Sebastiano which originally was an oratory then converted into a church. Nowadays, it is considered one of the most interesting churches in Venice thanks to the Fresco Cycle of Paolo Veronese.

Our visit will finish at the Monastery of San Sebastiano, located near the Church of San Sebastiano.
