AR TECHNOLOGY

The Bauhaus of the Seas project, facilitated by the MA program in Digital and Public Humanities at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, introduces an innovative approach to explore and celebrate the neighborhood of Santa Marta, a lesser-known area within the city. The incorporation of Augmented Reality (AR) plays a pivotal role in transforming the user’s interaction with the environment. By utilizing the Wikitude app and AR target images, the project provides an immersive experience, allowing participants to engage with digital content seamlessly integrated into the physical surroundings of Santa Marta. This fusion of digital and physical realms enhances the exploration of the neighborhood, offering a dynamic platform for storytelling, historical insights, and cultural narratives that may otherwise go unnoticed.

The use of AR technology in this project not only serves as a tool for educational and cultural exploration but also democratizes access to information about the neighborhood. Participants can unlock layers of knowledge and narratives by simply pointing their devices at specific AR targets, enabling a more inclusive and engaging experience for residents and visitors alike. The incorporation of AR through the Wikitude app thus becomes a catalyst for fostering a deeper connection with Santa Marta, turning the exploration of this lesser-known area into an interactive and enriching journey that transcends traditional boundaries between the digital and physical worlds.

What about Wikitude?

Wikitude is an augmented reality (AR) app that enhances the real-world environment by overlaying digital information, such as images, videos, and 3D models, onto the user’s physical surroundings. The app utilizes the camera on your smartphone or tablet to recognize and track objects or locations in the real world, seamlessly integrating virtual content with the user’s immediate environment. One of the notable features of Wikitude is its ability to provide location-based AR experiences, offering users contextually relevant information based on their geographic position. This makes it a versatile tool for various purposes, including navigation, tourism, education, and entertainment.

To use Wikitude, start by downloading and installing the app from your device’s app store. Once installed, open the app and grant the necessary permissions, particularly access to your device’s camera. To experience augmented reality, point your device’s camera at an object, location, or image that the app supports. Wikitude will then recognize the target and overlay relevant digital information on your screen. The app often allows users to interact with the augmented content, providing a dynamic and engaging experience. With its user-friendly interface and diverse applications, Wikitude transforms the way users engage with and perceive their surroundings through the lens of augmented reality.
